As you get older, there are a few things you should do to keep your teeth healthy and strong. You see, several factors can actually influence your oral health, and as you get older, you’ll be more likely to deal with these problems. Fortunately, there are several symptoms you can watch for and a few steps you might need to take to keep your teeth healthy.
A common problem you should watch for is actually gum disease. Naturally, if you’re coping with gum disease, you should have it addressed as soon as possible. Still, please note that you may be more susceptible to this issue as you get older. Luckily, gum disease is fairly easy to reverse if it’s treated early enough. We suggest setting up an appointment with us if you’re worried about gum disease.
Sadly, dry mouth is another issue you should watch for. You see, if you have dry mouth, you won’t produce enough saliva. While this might not seem like a major issue, did you know that saliva can keep your teeth clean by carrying plaque and bacteria away from your teeth? In other words, saliva might help you avoid issues such as gum disease and tooth decay. You’ll be more likely to have these issues because some medications cause dry mouth. Since you’ll probably take more medications as you age, you’ll be more vulnerable to dry mouth.
Finally, have you ever heard that your teeth will fall out as you age? In reality, this isn’t necessarily true. You can stop your teeth from falling out, but gum disease and tooth decay will leave you more vulnerable to this issue. Generally, brushing and flossing play an important role in avoiding these problems. Following a diet containing vitamin D and calcium can also help you keep your teeth healthy.
